Family Meeting
1 p.m., Wednesday, has elided into 1 p.m., today,
The same time our mother's burial began, yesterday.
Alone in her house, still in the blessing of her presence,
We five children and our devoted co-trustee lawyer
Sit at the dining-room table,
Discussing the ultimate disposition of Charlotte's estate.
The next two hours, beckoning the future,
Subsume this sanctuary, in legally scrutinized quietude.
Now, taking a few cherished mementos, we leave,
Realizing that, most likely, we'll never again, together,
Set foot amidst our family's history,
Which will live here no matter who lives here next.
