Deeply, Often
Needy? Indeed not, not in the least.
If anything, we're the antithesis of neediness.
Since we were teenagers, younger,
Our lives have been synonymous with autonomy —
L.D., with freedom; Linda, with independence.
But what our affection and intimacy have taught us
Is that we do need each other, deeply, often,
To shelter our spirits from selfishness, coldness,
Need our touching, kissing, stroking, nuzzling,
To keep autonomy, independence, freedom
From becoming synonymous with loneliness.
