Last Day of the New Year
It's one thing to wish for, ask for, pray for snow
On Christmas Eve
And receive it as a blessing from heaven
Or surrogate infiniteness
In which one may invest spirituality,
But it's altogether another thing
To wish for, ask for, pray for snow,
A continuous dusting, anyway, if not a blizzard,
On New Year's Eve
And get a second benediction of divine will.
Ah, but here I am, in the North Woods,
This last day of 2009,
Circumscribed by a shimmering snowy halo
Glowing like a full moon
Welcoming the coming of wondrous times.
