Turkey Day
Turkey Day, I read, today, in USA Today,
Is supposed to be a celebration of religious diversity,
A humane, compassionate observance of theological tolerance,
A dialogue between divisiveness of the highest order —
Presbyterians, Mormons, Muslims, Baha'is, atheists, Jews,
Buddhists, Baptists, agnostics, Catholics, relativists, Hindus —
A live-and-let-live covenant of uneasy brotherhood,
A holiday devoted to acceptance of others' right to believe,
Seeing in God (or no god) the shape or mirage of divinity.
As for me, Turkey Day is a strictly capitalistic phenomenon,
Drummed up, by greedy American pocket-liners,
To give their platitudinous gratitude for their exercise of excess.
I see Turkey Day as a case of Macy's Day Parade-itis,
A chance to stuff the gut, glut on TV football, go comatose,
Sneak an extra day off, from a job that sucks the big one.
By the way, as a sidebar/footnote/aside,
I just might add that religion, from the beginning of civilization,
Has been a turkey stuffed with hubris, hatred, and war.
