Lucky Penny
Even in these days of your late sixties,
The eight-year-old in you, with curiosity's flicker in his eyes,
Delights in spying a tarnished Lincoln-head cent
On the restaurant entry's highly varnished hardwood floor,
Feels superstition's rush, all over again, on picking it up,
Turning it over and over, with his thumb and first finger,
Reciting its familiar mottoes
("In God We Trust," "Liberty," "E Pluribus Unum"),
Reflecting on its barely discernible date (1970),
Invoking the magic redolences of the serendipitous coin.
Setting the amulet conspicuously on your table,
You turn your focus to your newspaper and breakfast,
Knowing the lucky penny will protect you, all day...
Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, and Captain Marvel
Will keep the world safe from evil.
