1970
The drive back, into Manhattan, from Mount Hebron Cemetery,
Is easy, as we piece together our mistakes from the ride there.
Finding a parking space near Marlene's apartment,
On 72nd Street, just off Central Park West,
Proves much more difficult — a mix of persistence and great luck.
Soon enough, the five of us are seated at Isabella's restaurant,
At an outdoor table, facing Columbus Avenue, ordering salads,
Softly talking, laughing, discussing how glad we are
To have shared the visit, bid shalom to Shirley and Murray
And Judy's parents (her mother, Murray's sister) and daughter.
Lunch done, eager to explore the park, you and I head south.
As we turn the corner, at 68th and Central Park West,
I spy a providential penny, glinting as if it were newly minted.
It speaks to our eyes, from the sidewalk — "1970" on its face.
"It's a gift from Daddy and Mommy," you say. I lay it in your palm.
