The Brink
People are being laid off, foreclosed on, bankrupted.
Specters of the Great Depression are revisiting us,
Standing in soup lines, selling apples, sleeping in shelters.
And all I can think is that this nation is done,
Has sunk to the depths of irreparable desperation, death —
Another of history's victims, civilization's descents.
Is there anything that can bring us back from the brink?
Can we give up our American waste of life,
For a way of life based on the blessings of less and less?
