Traditional Thanksgiving Dinner
Thank God I don't have a family, anymore,
And don't need to follow the traditional script
Thanksgiving demands its practitioners act out —
Obese turkeys devouring obese turkeys,
Between sleeping through NFL games and in-law feuds.
I hate candied yams, mashed potatoes, giblet gravy,
Not only with a passion but geysering bile,
Disdain creamed spinach, cranberry sauce, ham, stuffing,
Loathe buttery, sugary pecan and pumpkin pies,
Abominate turkey, itself — gluttony's poster bird.
This Thanksgiving, as has become my tradition,
I walk to my empty neighborhood café,
Order a lettuce-and-tomato salad, a glass of iced tea,
Ask the sole waitress to switch off the TV,
And give thanks.
